Rhodesian Ridgeback
An athletic African hunter recognisable by the ridge of hair along its back, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is dignified, loyal and well suited to heat.

History and origins
The Rhodesian Ridgeback was developed in southern Africa from European dogs and indigenous ridged dogs. It accompanied hunters and held big game, including lions, at bay.
The standard was set in 1922 in Rhodesia, today's Zimbabwe.
Temperament
Dignified, calm and very attached to its family, the Ridgeback is reserved with strangers and naturally protective. It can be independent and stubborn.
Sensitive, it responds better to consistent, positive training than to harshness.
Health
Puppies should be checked for dermoid sinus, a skin malformation along the spine. Hip and elbow dysplasia and hypothyroidism are also reported.
Regular veterinary follow-up is recommended.
