Famous as Tintin's companion, the Wire Fox Terrier is a lively, clever and brave little dog with plenty of character.
History and origins
The Wire Fox Terrier shares its origins with the Smooth Fox Terrier: both hunted foxes in England. The wire-coated variety was later recognised as a separate breed.
Snowy, Tintin's companion in Hergé's comic books, is a Wire Fox Terrier.
Temperament
Quick, intelligent and self-assured, the Wire Fox Terrier is cheerful and attached to its family. It barks readily, digs and may be intolerant of other dogs.
Consistent training and plenty to do are essential.
Health
This is a robust breed. Lens luxation, some skin allergies and deafness should be monitored.
Regular veterinary follow-up is recommended.

Feeding
Food for small active dogs, in suitable portions, suits it.

Exercise
It needs at least an hour of intense activity a day: games, running, agility and search work.
Keep it on a lead outside fenced areas.
It copes fairly well with heat, especially with a well-kept coat. In summer, schedule activities early in the morning or in the evening. It can live in an apartment if it gets plenty of exercise every day.
Grooming
Its wiry coat needs weekly brushing and hand-stripping every three to four months. It sheds little.
